Sylvester Urban

Sylvester J. Urban, age 92, of Hays, passed away Monday, August 15th at the Sterling House in Hays. He was born on Feb. 26, 1919 in Loretto, KS. to Adam S. and Appelonia (Basgall) Urban. He graduated from Otis High School. He married Alfreda Pfeifer on May 6, 1939 in Loretto. She preceded him in death in 1989. He married Ruby (Finch) Miller on Feb. 2, 1990. She preceded him in death in 2006. He was a farmer and contractor who especially enjoyed doing fine woodworking projects such as grandfather clocks and chests out of native Kansas trees. He was a well-known contractor and handyman. He was a member of the Sunflower Polka Club, 3rd degree Liebenthal Knights of Columbus and a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.Sylvester is survived by two sons, Barry Urban and Randy Urban and his wife Debbie all of Bison; three daughters, Gloria Lang and husband Vic of Hays, Donna Leiker and husband Larry of Munjor and Janice Urban of Hays. 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren also survive him.He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wendlin, Clem and Boniface; four sisters, Katie Urban, Bridget Urban, Rose Basgall and Regina Basgall; a great grandson, Marshall Urban and a son-in-law, Kenneth Brown.Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday at St. Mary's Church in Loretto, KS. Visitation will be 4 PM - 8 PM Wednesday at Brock's North Hill Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS. 67601 and 9:30 AM until service time Thursday at the church. A Liebenthal Knights of Columbus rosary service will be at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil service at 7 PM all Wednesday at the funeral home.
