Steven Harkness, age 66, of Hays passed away Friday, September 25, 2015 in Hays. He was born June 17, 1949 in Ransom, Kansas to Vance and Lois (Wyrill) Harkness. His education included a Master's Degree in Speech Pathology, Bachelor's in Art and a Bachelor's in Education.
He was an artist through and through--more than simply a hobby, it was his way of life. He did work as a programmer switcher at the local television station in Hays, a Chinese cook, formally at Quan's Chinese delight and a speech pathologist. As a family there were two radio shows avidly listened to on the weekends: Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor, and the Thomas Jefferson Hour. His hobbies included playing guitar, Painting, drawing, models, reading, art, music and photography His interests very much focused around learning as much as he could, every day. He had a beautiful mind. He was compassionate, caring. He was a loving, giving and unselfish father. Very creative, original, contemplative and thoughtful. He LOVED the Western Kansas country side and rural areas, and are a common theme throughout his artwork
He is survived by two daughters, Michelle Harkness, Kansas City, MO and Amanda Harkness, Hays, KS; a Brother Gary Harkness, and wife Linda Harkness, Larned, KS and a sister Jane Spiess, and husband Jim Spiess, Wichita KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
