Scotty Legere

Scotty Leroy Legere, age 74, of Hays, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Hays Medical Center. He was born October 25, 1938 to Louis and Leta (Beghtol) Legere in Hill City, Kan., the 9th of 10 children. He was raised on a farm near Hill City. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, dad, and grandpa, and also for his smile and amazing sense of humor.

Scotty graduated high school in 1957 after playing many pranks in the halls of Hill City High School. He attended Fort Hays State University for one year before joining the Army. He served for 17 months as part of a traveling Army football team that played base teams across Europe. He was able to see much of the world as part of that team.

The day he returned from service he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Lynn (White) Legere. They were married 5 months later on December 7, 1963. To the union were born three children, Shawn, Stacy and Kami. Family always came first for Scotty and he was happy when everyone gathered at his home.

Scotty and Libby farmed near Hill City for the first few years of marriage while also working for Kansas Power Company. In 1968, he became a Kansas Highway Patrolman and the family moved to Greensburg. During his time with the Patrol he served as an instructor for the Highway Patrol Academy in Salina. Many of the patrolmen who went through the academy never forgot him (and all the push-ups and running they did) and kept in touch. In 1976, he was promoted to Sergeant and the family moved to Hoisington. He wore his uniform with pride and served the Patrol with honor.

In 1981 a career change to farm and ranch real estate brought the family to Hays where Scotty joined Legere Auction and Realty, Bel Air Realty, and most recently Farm & Ranch Realty of Colby. He was known throughout the real estate world for his integrity and honesty. He loved serving those he worked with and made friends wherever he went.

He loved being a grandfather and whenever one of his grandchildren spilled milk or made a mess he would always say "I did that once when I was a kid," which led his granddaughter Arin to comment, "Grandpa must have been a handful when he was little!" He was constantly pulling pranks and making jokes, right up to his last day. He always wanted to know how you were doing and never talked about himself (except to say he was always "doing awesome"). His love of animals was lifelong, especially with his Golden Retriever, Jesse.

He will forever be cherished by his best friend and wife of 50 years, Libby, and his beloved family, Shawn and wife Leigh and children Chase and Miles, Overland Park, Stacy and husband Patrick Toepfer, Hays, and children Quin, Arin, Owen, Ashtyn and Emma, and Kami Legere, Madison, Miss., and children Drew and Parker.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Don, Bob, Jon Larry, and sister Mary Ann Littlejohn. And survived by brothers George, Clair, Major, and sisters Jane Jansen and Joyce Legere.
