Ronald E. "Ron" Broetzmann, 79, Hays, died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at his home. He was born Feb. 22, 1937, in Pierre, S.D., to Elmer and Lavina (Reed) Broetzmann. He grew up in Holyrood and was a graduate of Holyrood High School.
Alfreda J. "Freda" Broetzmann, 78, Hays, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016, at her home. She was born Sept. 25, 1938, in Schaffer to Phillip and Esther (Tittel) Foos. She grew up in Great Bend and a graduate of Great Bend High School.
They were married on May 27, 1956, in Holyrood. They attended the Presbyterian church and moved to Hays in 2011. He was a police officer for more than 25 years, working in Liberal, Great Bend, as a detective at Garden City and a Chief of Police at Goodland. After his police work, he was an insurance adjuster at Farm Bureau in Pratt for 10 years and retired in 1995.
He received Policeman of the Year in Garden City and a commendation from the FBI. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1956 to 1959. He enjoyed woodworking and his coffee group.
She was a bookkeeper at the Kansas Wildlife and Parks Department in Pratt for 10 years. She enjoyed reading, cooking and they both enjoyed spending time with their family and grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Pam Blau-Erickson and husband, Ken, Russell, Lori Hertel and husband, Stan, Hays; his two sisters, Betty Perrin, Bull Shoals, Alaska, and Marilyn Wormeringer, Shawnee, Okla.; and her sister, Jean Smith, Hays; three grandchildren, Joshua Blau and wife, Stacy; Chelsee Hoffman and husband, Danny and Daniel Hertel; and two great-grandchildren, Bailee and Landry Hoffman.
They are preceded in death by their parents; a son, Ronald Craig Broetzmann; a grandson, Steven Lee Hertel; a granddaughter, Ana Hertel and her brother, Bud Foos.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Clines-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 E. 22nd, Hays, KS 67601; burial in Mount Allen Cemetery Hays with military honors by the Hays Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7690.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Dreiling-Schmidt Cancer Center, the Ellis County Dolly Parton Imagination Library or Kansas Peace Officers Association.
