Obituary



Randy Lee Goodale, 63, longtime resident of Hays, Kansas died Thursday, April 30, 2020 at his home in Schoenchen, Kansas from a long complicated medical history.

He was born August 26, 1956, in St. Francis, Kan., the fourth and youngest child to Max Alvin and Esther Delphine (Raile) Goodale. His family farmed around the St. Francis area. Randy competing in basketball, football and played the drums at St. Francis High School, where he graduated Class of 1974.

After briefly playing basketball for Fort Hays State University, he moved to Great Bend where he met Rainell Anderson. They were married September 24, 1977 in St. Francis. She proceeded him in death on March 2, 2017. They had two sons. They spent several years in Thornton, CO and St. Francis before returning to Hays. Randy went on to complete his education at Fort Hays State University, earning his degree in industrial technology.

In 1989, he moved the family to California where they lived in Moreno Valley and Riverside. There Randy taught at Sierra Middle School as the wood shop teacher 1989-1992. He often reflected on these years in California with fond memories, his family spending their summers at the beach and playing competitive beach volleyball.

In 1992, Randy returned to Hays, where he taught and coached at Hays High School for 21 years. He taught industrial tech classes including metals and welding, drafting, woodworking and small engine mechanics. Often called "Mr. G" by his students, he was awarded USD 489s Master Teacher of the Year 1997-1998. He retired in 2013. He enjoyed substitute teaching at HMS and HHS during his retirement.

His love for teaching youth carried on into his coaching as well, coaching every level from his sons t-ball teams to high school athletics. Randy was a head womens basketball coach, volleyball and softball coach for Hays High School many years. After his coaching years he continued to do the timing and score keeping for HHS soccer teams and line judge volleyball up until his retirement.

He was a member of the Hays First United Methodist Church and part of the Chapel Sunday School Class. He enjoyed serving as a host for the Sunday morning coffees.

Randy will be remembered for his love of sports, teaching, coaching, Bible study, the outdoors, bird hunting, cooking, photography, a good drum jam and his grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family and was a proud Papa.



He leaves behind two sons: Jeremy (Jennifer) Goodale of Hays, and Jerod (Jessica) Goodale of Hays; five grandchildren: Reanna, Riley, Lauryn, Lila and Anderson, all of Hays; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Bracelin and Joyce Black; and a brother, Sam Goodale.

A memorial service at the Hays First United Methodist Church will be announced at a later date. Cremation has taken place and inurnment at the St. Francis Cemetery will be scheduled later this summer.
