Philena Melba (Scheuerman) Baus, age 92, of Hays formerly of McCracken passed away Monday, January 26, 2015 in Hays. She was born June 16, 1922 on the family farm north of Bison, Kansas to Philip C. and Sarah (Schlegel) Scheuerman. She attended Happy Hollow country school rural Bison. She graduated from Bison High School as the class Valedictorian. She received her teaching certificate from Fort Hays Teachers College and later earned her Masters degree. She married Elmer L. Baus in 1943 in Bison, KS. He preceded her in death in 1974. Philena retired from McCracken Elementary School in 1986 after a 36 year teaching career that started in a one room school house near Hargrave, KS. During her retirement she stayed active doing volunteer work for Methodist Youthville, CASA, her church and preparing income taxes as part of the AARP program for many years in McCracken, LaCrosse and Hays. She also became a foster parent for three Vietnamese refugees from the Korean War. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening, cooking and crocheting. She was a loving mother and grandmother and all who knew her felt touched in a special way. She will also be remembered as a caring and devoted teacher by the many students she taught. She is survived by a son, Elmer Baus Jr. and wife Betty of Pratt, KS; a daughter, Gloria Blackwell of Hays; three foster sons, Hung Pham and wife Tran of Hays, Kim Cao of Arlington, TX and Qui Quach and wife Yen of Salina, KS; eleven grandchildren, Reed Blackwell and wife Dayle, Brooke Deines and husband Curtis, Spring Bentham and husband Zach, Shawn Baus and wife Lisa, Leigh Baus and Kaley, Dawn Irvin and husband Shane, Christopher Pham, Kevin Pham, Dat Quach, Ivy Cao and Vivian Cao as well as 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Melvin, Clifford and Orland Scheuerman. Funeral services will be 10 AM Friday, January 30, 2015 at Messiah Lutheran Church 2000 Main Street, Hays. Burial will follow in the McCracken City Cemetery, McCracken, KS. Visitation will be Thursday 6 PM 8 PM at Brocks-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601. Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church, Hospice of Hays Medical Center or the Cancer Council of Ellis County.
