Mary Alice Gottschalk, age 91, of Hill City, Kansas passed from this life on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Brookdale of McPherson, Kansas.

She was born January 27, 1928 In Hays, Kansas and was the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (Jacobs) Basgall. She married George Gottschalk Jr. in 1949. He passed away on April 25, 1990.

Mary Alice spent her childhood in Hays. She attended St Joseph Catholic Grade School and Girls Catholic High School. She graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1949 with a BS in education. She received her reading specialist certification and then her Masters degree in secondary education in 1976. She was active in college activities including Newman Club, Student Council, Mortar Board, student college newspaper. She was a life member of Alpha Gamma Delta social sorority.

She moved to Hill City with her husband in 1959 where they owned JR's Home Furniture Company where she worked in the business as the secretary. In 1974 she was employed as a teacher at USD 281 Hill City High School teaching there until 1996 during which time she was the HCHS golf coach and assistant volleyball coach. Her memberships included, National Education Association, KNEA, IRA (International Reading Association), KIRA and Missouri Valley Adult Education Association. She chaired the Right To Read Program at HCHS, KAYS sponsor then JR/SR class sponsor. She loved to read and was an avid golfer.

Mary Alice taught the GED program for Colby Community College and served as the outreach coordinator for 30 years. She belonged to Helios Federated Club in Hill City and was employed as a salesperson for Fred Pratt Real Estate. Her first love was education and as outreach coordinator she helped to give everyone in Graham County the opportunity to take classes and gain an education.



She is survived by her son, George Martin Gottschalk and wife Lori of Palmdale, California; two daughters, Gina Marie Deutscher and husband Bruce of Stockton, Kansas and Gwyn Elizabeth Muto and husband Bob of McPherson; six grandsons George E. Gottschalk of Champaign, Illinois, Kyle, Cody and Casey Deutscher of Stockton, and Brenton and Adam Boyer of McPherson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Edward and Gilbert Basgall and four sisters Bina Wangerin, Dorothy Gilmore, Valerie Basgall and Norma Jean Benoit.

Funeral services will be 11 AM Saturday November the 2, 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hill City. Burial will be at 3 PM in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Visitation will be Saturday 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM with a rosary service at 10:30 at the church.

Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hill City or towards scholarships at Hill City High School.
