Marvin Leroy Wendel, 80, Hays, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born January 19, 1933 on the family farm, northeast of Almena, Kansas to Roscoe and Esther (Miller) Wendel. Marvin attended Center Country School and graduated from Almena Rural High School in 1950.
He grew up helping on the farm and, following graduation, Marvin continued farming with his dad. On December 26, 1954, Marvin married Sherrill Lou Jenkins, Norton. They had two daughters, Patti and Jeanette, whom they raised on the family farm. Marvin and Sherrill continued to live on the farm until 1999, when it was leveled by a tornado. They then resided in Norton, until 2007, when they moved to Hays.
Marvin served in the United States Army and Reserves. Most of his life, he was a farmer. Later, he also worked at the Almena State Bank and the Almena Irrigation District.
He was a member and past Master of Naphtali Lodge #310, member and past Worthy Patron of OES, Bethlehem Chapter #89, member of the Congregational Church, Almena and First Christian Church, Plainville.
Survivors include his wife, Sherrill, of the home, daughters Patti McNeill and Ray Makings, Hays, and Jeanette Harris and Steve Boos, Phillipsburg, four grandsons, Devin and Dustin McNeill, Hays, Skyler Harris, Hays and David Harris, Colorado Springs, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Brocks North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays. Inurnment and graveside service will be held Thursday at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Almena, KS. at 2:30 P.M..
