Lyle Dean Stroup, 79, Hays, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at his home. He was born December 4, 1932, in Smith County, Kansas to Hugh M. and Dorothy M. (Musser) Stroup. Lyle was a 1950 graduate of Smith Center High School. In high school he excelled in football, basketball, track and baseball. He was invited to tryout camp for the St. Louis Cardinals professional baseball team as a pitcher. He was also involved in FFA and received numerous awards, including Grand Champion, for livestock competition. While attending Fort Hays State College, he played football and majored in math and physics.
He married Mary Jo Wolf on June 2, 1956 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hays, KS. He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corp. and received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained while serving with the First Marine division, seventh Regiment in Korea. He was a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Lyle started his long and successful career in the oil and gas industry working for Welex, a division of Halliburton, for twenty years in various capacities. While working for Welex, he was a logging engineer, district manager, division manager, and head of Canadian operations. In addition, he flew to Duncan, Oklahoma each year to teach their logging classes to new hires.
He also developed the "Fracfinder" logging tool which is still used in the industry. After working for Welex in Kansas, Louisiana, Texas, Wyoming, and Canada, he settled back in Hays. He worked for Great Guns logging and perforating company, ELI, and Nabors as an independent oil well consultant and log analyst the remaining thirty years he spent in the industry. He was an independent oil operator for several years and a member of KIOGA.
Lyle was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and he loved his animals. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo; children, Carla Hattan and husband, Mike, Lila Nelson and husband, Ron, Anthony "Tony" Stroup and wife, Marla, Paul Stroup and wife Sara; 9 grandchildren, Lyle Herrman, Logan Nelson, Holly Hattan, Ross Hattan, Laura Stroup, Landon Stroup, Layton Stroup, all of Hays; Lee Stroup, Overland Park and Seth Johnson, Gypsum, Colorado; 3 great-grandchildren: Ashton Herrman, Conner Herrman, Caden Lattin. Step grandchildren: Rachel Pendergast, Brad Pendergast, Sara Mohr, KC Tomanek, Kambri Tomanek, Tyler Legleiter; 3 step great-grandchildren: Alayna, Desirae, and Madilyn Mohr, all of Hays.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant son Daniel Stroup.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays; interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, with military honors by Hays Veteran of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will be Monday 5 PM - 8 PM and Tuesday 8:45 AM - 9:15 AM all at Brock's North Hill Chapel.
A parish vigil service and rosary will be Monday at 7 PM at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warriors or Humane Society of the High Plains in care of Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.
