Lucille Walters

December 8, 1920, Carol Lucille McCarty was born to Martin W. McCarty and Minnie Maude Manely McCarty in Belleville, Kansas. Lucille was raised in Washington Kansas along with her sister Lorna and brother J. E. McCarty. No matter where she lived, she was always from Washington, and always looked forward to Memorial Day and class reunions.

George Hicks and Lucille McCarty were married on February 21, 1938. Some of their best memories as a young couple were their time together when George was stationed in Coeur dAlene, Idaho for Navy training. They made their home in Washington where George began his career with Boogaarts and Lucille as a mother. Their first transfer was to Kearney, Nebraska. One day on a trip home to Washington as they drove through Smith Center, KS, Lucille stated "I dont think I would want to live here" and as things go, just a few weeks later they were transferred to Smith Center. Lucille enjoyed life for over thirty years. Lucille and George were blessed with Jim, Peggy and Jeri over 17 years. With such an age difference, for many years her home was always open to any of the childrens friends. Family was the center of her life and she didnt like anything better than having all generations together.

Lucille was one of the first telephone operators in Washington KS and later on after raising her family, loved working at Boltons but always excelled as super Mom. Following Georges death and due to failing eyesight she moved once again to Goodland, KS where Peggys family lived. She never let her eyesight slow her down and loved going to the Senior Center and dances and playing cards. She and Cliff Walters were married on January 15, 1994 and shared five years of great times until his death. In 2005 Lucille moved to Hays, KS to be near Jeris family. She added to her family circle the residents and all the staff of the Good Samaritan Center which was her home for almost eight years. Nanny was always interested in all the grandkids and great grandkid sports and loved going to games or listening on the radio and the phone calls after the activities. In November 2014, she was so proud of the birth of her great granddaughter and namesake, Devan Lucille Stewart.

Lucille was reunited with her loved ones who passed before her on January 11, 2015, in Hays, KS just a month after celebrating her 94th birthday. She is survived by three children, son Jim and LeAnn Hicks of Sand Springs, OK, Andy and daughter Peggy Laue of Edwards, MO and Kim and daughter Jeri Stewart of Hays, KS. Also nephew Dee and Sheila Latham, grandchildren David and Bev Hicks, Kevin and Gena Hicks, Wes and Deena (Laue) Clark, Scott Laue, Jace and Amanda Stewart and Kale Stewart, four great grandsons and six great granddaughters, nieces, nephews and an abundance of great friends.

Services will be held in on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at Smith Center. Reminiscing and celebrating will be held at 10:30-11:30 at the VFW and graveside services at 1:00 at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Good Samaritan Center, 2700 Canal Blvd, Hays KS 67801
