Laverne Schumacher

Obituary

Laverne W. Schumacher, age 83, of Hays, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at Hays Medical Center, Hays. He was born February 28, 1938, to Wendelin and Anna (Schmidt) Schumacher in Pfeifer, Kansas. Laverne grew up and attended grade school in Pfeifer, then later graduated from Saint Joseph Military Academy in 1956. Laverne married Janie B. Urban on May 9, 1959, in Loretto, Kansas. They had 4 children, Brian, Steven, Eileen, and Bruce.

After serving in the Army National Guard he worked at the Hays Flour Mill and served 19 years as a City of Hays Police Officer. After his law enforcement career, he started L&J Schumacher Construction. The business helped to develop many areas in the Hays community and the surrounding area. Laverne was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Hays.

Laverne was an avid baseball fan and developed a love for the game at an early age that he kept throughout his lifetime. He was a co-founder and President of the Hays Baseball Association and helped with the development of the Jayhawk Conference. He coached the Hays Larks in the 1960s and early 1970s. Some of his proudest coaching positions were in the dugout of his grandchildrens little league teams. As they grew older, he could be found sitting in a lawn chair along the third-base line cheering and supporting all his grandchildren and later his great grandchildren. He also enjoyed Tuesday night Poker Club, hunting and fishing with his brothers, sons, and grandchildren.

Laverne is survived by his wife, Janie, Hays; sons Brian (Jane) Schumacher, Hays; Bruce (Brenda) Schumacher, Lawrence, KS; daughter Eileen Schumacher, Hays; daughter in law, Paula Schumacher; brothers Dennis (Kathy) Schumacher and Wendelin Jr. (Carol) Schumacher, both of Hays, sister in law, Clarita Schumacher, Victoria; adopted aunt, Dolores Leiker; eight grandchildren, Dustin (Becky) Schumacher, Derek (Vanessa) Schumacher, Jenna Jacobs (Dylan Cobb), Wade Schumacher (Ashley Wunder), Dylan Schumacher (Danielle Lickteig), Katelyn Schumacher (Peter Maier), Cole Schumacher, and Wyatt Schumacher; nine great grand-children including Dalton, Brynn, Blair, Jaci, Louden, Sutton, Adrianna, Kendry, and Vincent.
