Obituary
Jana Lyn (Salmans) Jordan, 64, died Friday, December 13, 2019, at her home in Hays, Kansas. She was born June 22, 1955, in Dodge City, Kansas, the daughter of Otha Truman Salmans and Sylvia May (Clifton) Salmans. Jana grew up in Hanston, Kansas, and graduated from Hanston High School in 1973.
After high school, Jana attended Colby Community College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Fort Hays State University in 1977. Her professional career focused on working with people of all ages and backgrounds. She began her career in tourism as the International Group Tour Guide for Hays Travel for several years, and then served 26 years as the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau Director, retiring in 2014.
Jana was married to Brad Jordan, and together they had one son, Zachary. They later divorced.
She is survived by her son, Zachary, of Westminster, Colorado; two brothers; Larry (Marilyn) and Walt (Gwen) Salmans, both of Hanston, Kansas, and one sister, Sylvia Ann (BJ) Barron, Ft. Myers, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Elaine Keeten, and a brother, Lee Salmans.
The youngest of six children, she enjoyed riding horses and was always singing, During her adult life, she enjoyed traveling, entertaining, and giving back to her community. She was instrumental in many local, regional, and statewide tourism initiatives that encouraged visitors to see the wonders of our area. Her community involvement included the FHSU Encore Series selection committee, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ellis County, Toys for Tots, and many other community organizations.
Jana didnt know a stranger and spent her life sharing her enthusiasm with anyone who met her. She served as a mentor to many marketing and tourism professionals across the state and was a friend to anyone she met. She was most proud of her son, Zach.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at the Celebration Community Church, Hays, Kansas. Memorial visitation will be 10 AM until service time with a lunch for all family and friends will follow all at the church. Private inurnment will be in the Fairmount Cemetery in Jetmore, Kansas on Thursday, December 19th.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Humane Society of the High Plains or to the FHSU Foundation, to establish a Tourism and Hospitality Management scholarship, in care of the funeral home.
