James Shutts

James Oliver Shutts, age 84, of Midland, TX. passed away on March 9, 2011 in Midland, TX. He was born on August 14, 1926 in Plainville, Ks. to Clifford M. and Edith I. (Peavy) Shutts. He spent his boyhood in Ellis County attending grade school in Ellis. When he was 12 he moved to Idaho with his mother and sisters. He entered into the Army when he was 18 and eventually was sent to Germany. The war ended and he remained with the Army of Occupation. He reenlisted and eventually spent the last of his time in the service stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs CO.On February 6, 1948 he married Peggy Stacy in Hays, Ks. Jim farmed with his father until he went to work for Popp Truck Line in Hays. He became self-employed as a service station owner operator in 1965 until he took a job with The Permian Corporation in 1968 and retired from that company in 1988 as a district manager.Jim was baptized into the Episcopal Church in Kimball, NE in 1972. He belonged to the American Legion Post, Hays, KS and The Sterling Elks Lodge in Sterling Co. After he and Peggy retired they traveled as often and they could and spent several winters in West Texas, and relocated to a retirement community in Midland, Texas in 2008. Jim enjoyed fishing but his biggest enjoyment other than being with his family was playing golf. He was fortunate to have 2 holes-in-one just a year and two days apart. He appreciated the days he got to play golf with his golf buddies and enjoyed their company.He is survived by his wife, Peggy of Midland, TX; sons, James Jr. and wife Rhonda of Midland, TX, Richard and wife Betty of Alpine, CA; a daughter, Kathryn Weatherman and husband Mike of Sylvan Grove, Ks. 6 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, and his first wife Wilma who died of polio. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 2:00PM at Brock's North Hill Chapel Funeral Home - 2509 Vine - Hays, KS. 67601.
