Jim grew up on a farm southwest of Hays, KS. As a farm boy he learned how to work. Working was also his hobby. He enjoyed remodeling/repairing on his house and of course, he did "honey do" jobs for his wife, his sister, his mother, and many others.
He graduated from Hays High School and Fort Hays State University with a bachelors degree in Business Administration. For over fifty years he worked as an insurance executive for several insurance companies. He enjoyed what he did and over the years made many everlasting friendships.
On December 21, 1996, he married the love of his life Carol (Spies) Befort. They traveled to every state in the USA and went on numerous cruises. He also enjoyed attending car shows, shopping at the Farmers Market and visiting with friends and family.
Jim and his wife Carol were both excellent cooks and they loved to entertain their friends and family with tasty meals and delicious desserts.
Jim is survived by his wife Carol of the home, his sons Sean (Whitney) Befort, Kansas City, Mo; Matthew Befort of Seattle, Wash; and daughter Kristin (Thomas) Patrick New York City, NY; Stepson Kent (Michelle LePlume) Spies, Erie, Co; Stepdaughters Kandy (Brian) Biesterfeld, Broomfield, Co; Kari (Brian) Dean, Gilbert, AZ; Nicole Spies, Gulf Breeze, FL; his sister Alberta Klaus, Hays, KS; twelve grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
