Gilbert "Bucks" Dinges, 87, Schoenchen, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Via-Christi in Hays. He was born December 2, 1926, in Schoenchen, Kansas to Peter and Katie (Engle) Dinges. He married Alfrieda Herrman in Liebenthal, Kansas, in l950. They were married for 64 years.
Gilbert was a farmer all his life. He was a member of the regular Army 1948 to 1949. In l971 he opened a family business called Rock Haven located north of Schoenchen on his farm with his wife and three children. Later Rock Haven was sold but it retained its original name to this day. Gilbert was elected Mayor in Schoenchen from 1973-l974. He was retired from USD 489 in l991 after 25 years of service to the school district. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus 4166 Schoenchen, and a 4th degree Knights of Columbus 00282 member. Gilbert was a faithful member of St. Anthony Church, Schoenchen. He was a lector in the church for 42 years and also was a Eucharistic Minister. Gilbert served on numerous church committees for 6 different priests.
In the last years of his life, he and Alfrieda found great joy in having the twin great grandchildren involved in their lives. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his family. Gilbert's family was his life.
Survivors include his wife; son Jason Dinges and wife Beryl; two daughters Karen Dinges Staab and husband Pat, and Beverly Dinges Gross all of Hays; one brother, Jim Dinges and wife Erma of Schoenchen, one sister Mary Binder and husband Robert of Hays; two sister-in-laws, Lavone Dinges of Hays and Mary Dinges of Bend, Oregon; six grandchildren, Joshua Dinges and wife Sarah, Matthew Dinges, Zachary Dinges and wife Michelle, Kourtney Gross, Megan Staab, and Sammy Staab; Four great grandchildren, Twins Javon Searight and Leia Searight, Carter Dinges, and Naomi Dinges.
One son preceded him in death, Kenneth Joe Dinges and his brothers, Alvin Dinges, Julius Dinges, Victor Dinges, Henry Dinges and Melvin Dinges and one sister Hilda Dinges Staab.
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Friday, July 1, 2014 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Schoenchen. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW..
Visitation will be Thursday 4 PM - 8 PM and Friday 9 AM - 9:30 AM all at Brock's-Keithley Funeral Chapel 2509 Vine Hays, KS 67601.
A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be Thursday at 5:30 PM. A combined 3rd and 4th degree rosary will be at 6:30 PM followed by a parish vigil at 7:00 PM all at the funeral home. The 4th degree Knights of Columbus will provide an honor guard from 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM .
