Ethel Lunette Geering died April 12, 2011, at the age of 99 in Hays, Kansas. She was born December 6, 1911, near Ash Grove, Kansas in Lincoln county to Orla M.Wright and Sarah Addie (Williams) Wright. She was a resident of Lincoln and Mitchell counties for most of her life. The past ten years she lived in Hays with her granddaughter Christa and family. On November 10, 1946, she married Buford D. Geering in Wilson, Kansas. She graduated from Sylvan Grove High School in 1930 and earned a teaching certificate from Fort Hays State University. Ethel began her elementary teaching career at Cedron, a one-room school house. Later, she taught at Allemede, Vesper, and Sylvan Grove. After her marriage to Buford, she left her teaching career to raise their three children. Later when her children were older, she resumed teaching at Ash Grove while finishing her bachelors degree at Fort Hays State. After the school closed, she taught at Hunter and Sylvan Grove until her retirement in 1977. Ethel was an active member of the Ash Grove United Methodist Church and later transferred her membership to the Grace Chapel UMC in Hunter. She was an avid genealogist and was a member of the North Central Kansas Genealogical Society. She was a volunteer at the Hunter community library. Ethel also enjoyed cultivating her flowers and garden. She was preceded in death by her husband Buford on December 15, 1968. Survivors include daughters Ruth Wise Tanis and husband Jim of Hays, Mary Sutton and husband Gary of Alta Vista, and a son David Geering and wife Rosemary of Salina; 7 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Ethel lived a long, fulfilling life and was a thoughtful and loving mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday at Grace Chapel United Methodist Church in Hunter, Kansas. Burial will be in the Spillman Cemetery.
