Elizabeth "Betty" Bradford

Elizabeth "Betty" Marie Hauenstein Bradford, 84, of Hays, died Sunday, September 2, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society, Hays. She was born on August 14, 1928 in Okarche, Oklahoma to Marie (Rohr) and John Oscar Hauenstein. She married Edmund Frederick Bradford on November 16, 1949.

Betty dedicated her life to her family and to her career of nursing. She attended St. Marys College of Nursing in Enid, Oklahoma and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1949. She served as director of Nursing at Parkview Hospital in El Reno, Oklahoma and Surgery Supervisor at Trinity Hospital in Dodge City, Kansas. After moving to Hays, Kansas in 1976, she worked as a supervisor at St. Anthonys Hospital until her retirement.

After retirement, Betty continued her profession of nursing by teaching certified Nurses Aide and Certified Medication Aide courses through Barton County Community College. Until the age of 81, she continued her lifes work of caring for the sick by doing private-duty nursing for many area residents in their homes.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Bird and husband John T. of Hays; two sons, Dr. Edmund James Bradford and wife Monica of Silver Spring, Maryland and Richard John Bradford and wife Nancy of Herrin, Illinois; eleven grandchildren, Amy Bird of Hays, John M. Bird and wife Gipsy of Hays, Patrick Bird of Portland, Oregon, Jessica Bird of Garden City, Kansas, Megan Leis-Gill of Columbia, Missouri, Emily Bradford of Chicago, Illinois, Allison Bradford and Colleen Bradford of Silver Spring, Maryland, Jaime Bradford of Garden City, Kansas, Rob Bradford of Maryville, Illinois and Rachel Barrow and husband Sean of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Great grand-children are Samantha Bird Kochanowski of Hays; Cameron and John E. Bird of Hays; Taylor Bird of Dallas, Texas, Ava and Olivia Gill of Columbia, Missouri and Riley and Eoin Barrow of Las Vegas, Nevada.

She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews as well as her adopted sister, Margie Portnier of Stockton, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund Bradford on August 20, 2002; her parents; and two brothers, Oscar John and Joe Hauenstein.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays; burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.

A parish vigil will be at 6:30 PM Thursday followed by a rosary service all at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Good Samaritan Society of Hays.
