Eileen B. Wittman, age 86 of Ellis, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at the Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell. She was born June 27, 1927 in Ellis, Kansas to George and Bernice (Coleman) Matteson. She attended school in Ellis, graduating from Ellis High School in 1945. She also attended Colorado Woman's College in Denver for 1 year. She married Lawrence Wittman on November 7, 1948.
Eileen lived most of her life in Ellis with the exception of 4 years, from 1973 - 1977, when she lived in Great Bend, Ks. Through the years Eileen worked in the Ellis drugstores, as a dental assistant for Dr. Davis, as librarian for the Ellis Public Library, and children's librarian in the Great Bend Public Library. She was very active in her church and community. She was very involved with music, directing the choir for over 50 years in both the Ellis United Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Church in Great Bend, as well as giving voice lessons, and teaching a musical kindergarten for small children. She also directed several community productions.
She is survived by three daughters, Pat Pickett of Wichita, Carolyn Gnad and husband David of Russell, and Paulette Wittman of Great Bend; nine grandchildren, David Gnad and Laurie of West Point, NE, Becky Nowak and Perry of Scott City, Mandy Feik and Jeremy of Ellis, Lisa Elliott and Jim of Wichita, Jenny McCaig and John of Wichita, Michael Pickett and Amy of Wichita, Jamie Welch and Jon of Great Bend, Christopher Herl of Great Bend and Andrea Holinde and Andrew of Great Bend, 22 great-grandchildren, and a sister Janet Brewer and husband Tom of Huber Heights, OH.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence on March 26, 2009 and a brother, Glynn Matteson.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at the Ellis United Methodist Church. Burial will follow services in Mt. Hope cemetery in Ellis.
Visitation will be Friday 5 PM - 8 PM at Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E 17th Ellis, KS 67637 and Saturday 9 AM until service time at the church.
