Donald Anthony James Herl, 69, rural Ogallah, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, at Good Samaritan Society, Ellis. He was born Nov. 20, 1946, in Hays to Alvin Sr. and Dorothy (Karlin) Herl. He attended school at St. Marys, Ogallah Elementary and Trego Community High School.
He worked on the family farm and years ago he worked at Trego County Hospital. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellis. He enjoyed archery and designed his own personal bows and arrows. He enjoyed nature walks where he would often collect unique small artifacts. He was a self taught artist creating western scenes, comics, animals and nature themed landscapes. He enjoyed music and played the guitar, harmonica and attempted the banjo. He enjoyed reading history, geographical, religious books, reciting lengthy poems he had learned as a young man. He enjoyed his family and visits with them and friends.
Survivors include his unidentical twin brother, Ronald Herl and wife, Karen; another brother, Alvin Herl and wife, Amy, all of Ogallah; three sisters, Jeannette Augustine and husband, Charles, Ellis, Joyce Kinderknecht and husband, Kenneth, Collyer, and Joan Neufeldt and husband, Donovan, Moundridge; his nieces and nephews, Michael Augustine and wife, Jennifer and children, Samantha, Emily and Nathaniel, all of Topeka, Tony R. Knouf and wife, Christy and son, Hunter Conway, and a daughter, Khloe Knouf, all of Peyton, Colo., Michelle Goldsberry and husband, Craig and children, Cale and Tenley, all of Springfield, Mo., Jessica Augustine-Stegman and husband, Jason, Manhattan, Aaron Herl and fianc, Shelby Gottschalk, Hays, Alyssa (Herl) Weigel and husband Cole of Hays, Jared, Katelyn and Ryan Herl, Ogallah, John Kinderknecht, Colorado, and Nicole Neufeldt, Moundridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Marys Catholic Church, Ellis; burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a combined rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, all at Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.
