Obituary
Derek Dean Stortzum, 29, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away February 26, 2022. Derek, 'Deano' or 'D' to some, was born July 9, 1992 to Lesalene Pompell (Rumery) and Devin Stortzum in Denver, Co.
He was a standout in school, having good grades, and in his early years was a pitcher in baseball. At 16, and of course crazy about horses, Derek applied for his gallops license and started his career as an outstanding horseman. Then, he began his travels all over the country to gallop and train horses. After being out of school, he was able to earn his GED, and was always determined to do the best, no matter what it was, and could accomplish anything he set his mind to. Derek was loved by everyone who met him. A father that loved his child to the moon and back; Channing meant everything to Derek. He leaves a huge hole in all of our hearts. Derek was always joking, laughing, and the life of any party; everyone has a funny or crazy story with Derek.
Derek is survived by: His son, Channing Dean; father & step mother, Devin & Angela Stortzum; mother & step father, Thomas & Lesalene Pompell; brother, Justin Stortzum; grandmother, Donna Stortzum; sister, Ashleigh (Shay) Hayman; step brothers, Matthew Pompell & Jake Dill;
step sister, Ashley Brookes; and many uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, as well as his beloved dog, Sissy.
He was preceded in death by: Grandfathers, Delmar Stortzum and Lester Rumery, and grandmother Colene Porter.
