Dana Kraus, age 59, of Hays, died Sept. 26, 2013, of complications from leukemia. He was born April 29, 1954, at Hadley Hospital in Hays, Kansas, to mother Esther Fredericka Hueftle and father John Wesley Kraus. Dana graduated Hays High School in 1972 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Fort Hays State University in 1977. He married Jo Ellen Steele on June 5, 1982.
Dana was a fifth-generation farmer and rancher in Hays. Dana was an avid conservationist rancher who rode horseback daily to work cattle. He also enjoyed team roping and Wagons Ho. He was a black belt and teacher in Tae Kwon Do and also enjoyed saber sword fencing. Dana was a lover of all things ancient, including early music and history of the Hays community.
He is survived by his wife, Jo of the home; a son, Albert, and his wife Rachel of Sandburr Ranch, Hays; a daughter Ellen and her husband Air Force Capt. Dylan Bryant of Sandburr Ranch, Hays; his mother, Esther Kraus of Good Samaritan Society, Hays; sisters Rebecca Meis of Overland Park, Kan., and Rachel Johnson of Avon, CO. as well as many dear friends and relatives in the Hays area.
His father John and a brother, John Carl Kraus, preceded him in death.
A Celebration of Life Reception and scattering of cremains will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at the familys Sandburr Ranch, 1061 Yocemento Avenue west of Hays, Kan.
