Cody Steffen

Cody James Steffen was born August 17, 1990, and joined his mother in Heaven on June 2, 2023.


Cody was born to Linda and Dan Steffen in Hays, Kansas, where he resided prior to moving to Kansas City. He was very active in Youth Sports, including: soccer, football, basketball, and excelled in baseball. He attended Fort Hays State University and Johnson County Community College, studying Audio Engineering. He loved music, video games, as well as all sports with his favorite teams being the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and the North Carolina Tarheels. Along the way, Cody made many lifelong friends in Hays and Kansas City.


Cody is survived by his son, Kingsley James Steffen; his daughter, Karma Luella Love Steffen, both of the Kansas City area; his father, Daniel James Steffen and wife, Tammey, of Hays, KS; his paternal grandmother, Norma Samsel (Dans Birthmother) of Morristown, TN; and his aunts and uncles. Diana Sue “Dee” Brown and husband, Joe, of Delta, CO; Becky Hightower, of Grand Junction, CO; Terry Clayton and wife, Debbie, of Pratt, KS; Ronnie Clayton and wife, Imelda, of Trinidad, CO; Mike Clayton and wife, Teresa, of Dodge City, KS; Carla Clayton of Nephi, UT; Jalene Berger, of Loveland, CO; Tom Burkart, of Eureka, MT; as well as Mike Samsel and wife, Leesa, of Arlington, VA; Steve Samsel and wife, Jana, of Morristown, TN; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda C. (Burkart) Steffen; his aunt, Darlene Burkart; his maternal grandparents, Ted T. and Dorothy Burkart; his paternal grandparents, Grace L. Steffen and J.J. Steffen and his wife, Shirley.


A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, June 10, 2023, with Pastor Joel Hiesterman officiating at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays, 1919 East 22nd Street, Hays, Kansas 67601. Inurnment will be in Mount Allen Cemetery, Hays, Kansas where Cody will be buried beside his mother. A dinner will follow at the Hays VFW, 22nd and Vine.


The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday, at Cline’s-Keithley Mortuary of Hays.


In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials made payable to: Dan Steffen, for the establishment of a College Fund for Kingsley James Steffen.
