Celestine "Celly" Schumacher

Celestine 'Celly' C. Schumacher, 81, Hays, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, at Via Christi Village, Hays. He was born Feb. 10, 1933, in Munjor to Celestine and Helen (Jacobs) Schumacher. He graduated from Hays High School in 1951 and attended Fort Hays State University for four years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

He married Verlene L. Engel on June 2, 1956, in Hays. She preceded him in death March 29, 2001. He started with Dillons in 1959 and was manager for 26 years prior to his retirement in 1996.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, American Legion, Third and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, past parish council member, Eucharistic minister at IHMC and perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Adorers. He was also involved with the Chamber of Commerce, serving as president, Hays Kiwanis Club and the Hays Baseball Association. He was a baseball and basketball official for the Kansas State High School Activities Association and a past Boy Scouts treasurer for six years.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Schumacher (Joyce), Salina, Stan Schumacher (Donna), Fernley, Nev., and Steve Schumacher (Leann), Hays; three daughters, Debi Schumacher, Wichita, Joanne Gartner (Scott Bowden), Salina, and Donna Fleharty (Chris), Hays; six grandchildren, Maggie Carey (Chris), Topeka, Renee Gerstner (James), Leawood, Sarah Anglemyer (Corey), Topeka, Kristen Griffin (Thayne), Milwaukee, Wis., Jennifer Gartner, Salina, and Ava Schumacher, Hays; two great-grandchildren, Natalia Carey and Madeleine Carey, both of Topeka; three brothers, Bob Schumacher, Overland Park, and Verlyn Schumacher and Leon Schumacher, both of Hays; and two sisters, Patricia 'Toots' Engel, Garland, Texas, and Carol Freitag, Victoria.



He was preceded in death by his parents.
