Bernard Arthur "Bernie" Schoenthaler, age 88, of Ellis, passed away on September 16, 2012, in WaKeeney, KS. He was born on December 10, 1923, in Trego, County, Kansas to Frederick and Emma Regina (Deutscher) Schoenthaler. Bernie married Doris Elizabeth Ball on June 19, 1946.
He was a John Deere dealer, a bookkeeper and salesman for OLoughlin Motor Sales and Fondoble Motor Sales for 18 years. In 1964, he was appointed City Clerk of Ellis until his retirement in 1986. During his tenure as City Clerk, Bernie represented Ellis interests in an attempt to build Round Mound Dam on Big Creek. Upon retirement, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, camping and sailing.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Doris, WaKeeney; two children; Cheryl (R.J.) Robertson, Little Rock, Ark.; and Brian (Sheri) Schoenthaler, Valley Center, Kan.; and eight grandchildren; Leslie Robertson, Vail, Colo.; Jamie and Ashley Robertson, Denver, Colo.; Brandon (Liz), Schoenthaler, Valley Center; Brenton (Tara) Schoenthaler, Wichita, Kan.; and Braden, Bryson and Brittni Schoenthaler, Valley Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elvira Dubach, and brothers Donald and Raymond Schoenthaler.
Memorial services will be held at Noon on Saturday, October 6, 2012 October 6, 2012, at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Private family inurnment will take place prior to services in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Ellis. Arrangements in care of Keithley Funeral Chapel 400 E. 17th Ellis, KS 67637.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to the Ellis Nutrition Center, 8th and Washington, Ellis, Kan. 67637.
