Barbara Merker, age 98, of Hays, passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at St. John's Rest Home in Victoria. She was born on November 22, 1912 in Marienthal, Russia to Matthias and Walburga (Gerstner) Merker. The family came to Hays in 1923. She moved to Ohio in 1930 and returned to Hays in 1975.Barbara retired in 1974 as a schoolteacher after 26 years of teaching fourth, fifth and sixth grades. She taught primarily in Shaker Heights, Ohio starting in 1948. She attended college at the Walton School of Business in Chicago, De Paul University, Ohio State University and finished with a Master's in speech and dramatics from Northwestern University. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society and Hays Medical Center Auxiliary.She is survived by two nephews, Leo Merker of Baraboo, Wisconsin and Bill Wasinger of Hays; five nieces, Hedy Staab of Tucson,AZ., Millie Garris of Chicago, Clare Pelzel of Plattsburg, Missouri, Mary Lou Logan of Lakewood, Colorado and Betty Diederich of Hays.She was preceded in death by four sisters, Pauline Rohr, Mary Merker, Clara Staab and Amelia Wasinger and a brother, Peter MerkerServices will be held at 10 am on Saturday, January 15th at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with internment following the service at St. Catherine Cemetery in Catharine.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Friday and from 9 to 9:30 am on Saturday all at Brock's North Hill Chapel ~ 2509 Vine ~ Hays, KS. 67601.There will be a combined Altar Society and Hays Medical Center Auxiliary rosary service at 4:00 pm on Friday A parish wake service will be at 5:30 pm Friday all at the funeral home.Memorials are suggested to TMP-Marian or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
