Armella Wasinger Thompson, aged 89, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, in Roswell, Georgia. She was born July 22, 1923 in Victoria, Kansas to Pius and Anna (Sander) Leiker. She graduated from Victoria High School, Victoria, Kansas in 1941 and was honored to act as Grand Marshal of the 2012 Victoria High School Homecoming Parade. She married Victor A. Wasinger on May 23, 1945 at St. Fidelis Catholic Church in Victoria Kansas. They were married for thirty- three years before Vics death. On February 14, 1992, she was married to Marvin Thompson of Russell, Kansas at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Hays, Kansas.
During WWII, Armella worked at Walker Air Force Base as a clerk. As a young wife and mother, she was an office clerk at Fort Hays State College. For many years she was a clerical worker in the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation (ASC) Office in Hays where she served as a friend and advocate for many Kansas farmers. Later, she became the owner and manager of Feme Dress and Bridal Shop in Hays. Armella was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She also served as president of the St. Anthonys Hospital Ladies Auxiliary where she oversaw the scheduling of hospital volunteers and organized many fundraising events to benefit the hospital.
Armella enjoyed golfing, bowling, singing in the church choir, working in her yard, having lunch with friends, and traveling to visit her children and their families. She was an accomplished seamstress who made beautiful and treasured quilts for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was honored to be a Eucharistic minister and reader at masses at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Russell, Kansas. She will be remembered for her exuberant love of life, her strength of character, her devotion to and unwavering support of her family and friends, and her elegant, impeccable sense of style.
Survivors include her three daughters, Ruth Heckman and husband, Jim, of Guilford, Connecticut, Mary Kay Kimmitt and husband, Jim, of Canton, Georgia, LuAnn Wasinger of Fort Collins, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Jim Heckman, Amy (Heckman) Hitzrot and husband, Stephen, Jennifer (Kimmitt) Webb and husband, Jason, Victoria (VanderBeek) Pendleton and husband, Dan, Grant VanderBeek and wife Christina, Patrick Kimmitt and wife Rachel, Greg Kimmitt and wife, Marycel; thirteen great-grandchildren, Xavier and Leah Hitzrot, Connor, Trenton, and Liam Webb, Kayla and Hunter Pendleton, Aliyah, Christian, and Micah VanderBeek, Joaquin, Adrianna, and Olivia Kimmitt ; three sisters, Aquina Rajewski and husband, Howard, Theresa Haselhorst, Mary Ellen Schmidtberger and husband, Dan; one brother, Robert Leiker and wife, Velma; three brothers- in law, George Gatschet, Ed Peters, Tom Weisner; three sisters-in-law, Janice, Ada, and Ann Leiker.
Armella was preceded in death by her husband, Victor A. Wasinger and her second husband, Marvin Thompson; her parents; three sisters, Luella Dreiling, Rosaline Wiesner, Ethel Gatschet; four brothers, Gilbert, Elmer, Neon, and Laurian Leiker.
Funeral services will be Monday, April 29, at 10a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial following in St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 28, from 5-8p.m. at Brocks North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS. There will be a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
