Alvin A. Kohl, age 88 of Ellis, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014, at Hays Medical Center. He was born February 16, 1926, in rural Ellis County, Kansas, to Joseph and Mary (Graf) Kohl. He graduated from Ellis High School in 1944. On August 21, 1950, he married Rose Marie (Herl) in Ellis at St. Marys Church. She preceded him in death February 3, 1993.
Alvin was a longtime farmer and stockman in Ellis County. He went custom-cutting for 15 years from Texas to North Dakota, running the crew for several years, and he also did metalworkskilled welding and fabricationfor Don Kippes for several years. A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years, a Life Member of both the VFW and American Legion, and a member of the Kansas Wheat Growers Assn., serving as secretary for a year. He participated in the American Agriculture Movement, during which he drove a tractor to Topeka for a demonstration and sent a tractor to Washington D.C. for a national demonstration. He participated in league bowling in Ellis for many years, and he was also an avid dancer, participating in various local social dance organizations.
He is survived by a son, Alan M. Kohl and wife Janet of Hays; two daughters, Barbara A. Kohl of Albuquerque, NM, and Vicki M. Kohl of Olathe, KS; two grandchildren, Alec J. Kohl of Olathe, KS, and Rebecca Rose Kohl of Hays and a sister, Agnes Karlin of Hill City, KS, formerly of Oakley, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Paul, Alex, Tony, Ray, Alfred, and Walter Kohl; and three sisters, Tillie Herrman, Cecilia Jacques, and Elizabeth Hillman.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at St. Marys Catholic Church in Ellis. The burial will take place in the church cemetery, with military honors courtesy of the Ellis VFW.
Visitation will be Tuesday, 6:30 P.M.8:30 P.M. with a parish vigil service at 8:00 PMall at St. Marys Church. Arrangements are in care of Keithley Funeral Chapel, 400 E. 17th, Ellis, KS 67637.
