Alice Orth

Alice Orth, 85, of Hays, passed away at her home in the presence of family on Thursday, September 24th. She was born to Phillip and Mary Dreher in Antonino, Kansas, on May 17th, 1930. She married Leo Orth on August 16, 1948. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church in Hays.

Mrs. Orth spent many years as a homemaker for her nine children. She never hesitated to open her doors to visitors and during weekends there were usually additional dinner plates available for the 'boarder' students that her sons befriended at St. Joseph's Military Academy and who relished a home cooked meal. She also managed to dedicate years of service to St. Anthony's Hospital first as a nurse aide and then as a pharmacy technician. Following her retirement from St. Anthony's Hospital, she worked in the hospitality business in various capacities including a role as a morning greeter. It was in that role she met families from across the country and prided herself in helping them manage the challenges of travel.

After Mrs. Orths retirement, she packed her bags and took to the road herself. Often accompanied by her sister and brother, she saw Broadway shows, visited Las Vegas and experienced Mardi Gras at parades and balls. She celebrated her 80th birthday at the famous Jazz Room in the French Quarter of New Orleans. One of her last wishes spoken to her granddaughter, Dawn Rose, was to leave for Las Vegas as soon as possible.

Mrs. Orth is survived by her four sons: Harvey and wife, Marie of New Orleans; Steve and wife, Sandra of Colorado Springs; Charles and wife, Beth of Lee's Summit, Missouri; Marty and wife, Tonya of Urbandale, Iowa; and four daughters: Mary Peloquin and husband, Phil of Colorado Springs; Teresa and husband, Loren Boos of Hays; Betty Gray of Kansas City; Marie Orth of New Orleans; and, two sisters: Almita Augustine of Salina and Dorothy Schmidt of Great Bend. She had seventeen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her son, Robert; her sisters, Thelma Karlin and Darlene Leiker; and two brothers, CJ and Julius Dreher.

Memorial Mass will be at St Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, 2901 E. 13th St., Hays at 10:00AM on Monday, September 28th.. Interment will follow in the St. Josephs Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00PM 8:00PM Sunday, September 27th at Brocks-Keithley Funeral Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays. Rosary and vigil will begin at 7:00PM. Monday morning visitation before the funeral will be at 9:00AM at Brocks- Keithley Funeral Chapel.

The family wants to especially thank Mrs. Orth's friends and neighbors who provided special care during her final months including Elaine Pfannenstiel, Mary Rose Rohr, Gene and Theresa Flax, Roxie Korbe, Virginia Jacobs, Larry Korbe and others not mentioned who helped in her care, and especially our own family members who gave their strength and courage throughout the past year, Teresa and Loren Boos. A very special appreciation is given to all the neighborhood 'grandkids' who lifted 'Mrs. O's' spirits over the past year.

Donations can be made to the American Heart Association and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in her name.
