Agnes Ann "Aggie" (Langley) Niernberger, 87, Ellis, died Thursday, February 10th, 2011, at Hays Medical Center. She was born August 10th, 1923, in Detroit, Kansas, to Charles "Pete" and Teresa "Tess" (Nicholson) Langley. Aggie graduated from Ellis High School in 1941, and enlisted in the Army. She graduated from St. Margaret's Hospital School Of Nursing in 1944, and served in the Philippines from 1944 to 1945. Upon return from the war, she married Ralph J. Niernberger on August 5th, 1946, in Ellis, Kansas. She worked for several doctors in the Ellis area through the 1950's and early 1960's before finding her permanent job as a Registered Nurse at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center in 1964. Aggie remained at the Ellis Good Samaritan Center until 1988, retiring as Nursing Director. Then, coming full circle, she spent the final seven years living at the Good Sam, being lovingly cared for by some of the fine people that she had worked with over her long career.She stayed active in the community through her volunteer involvement in St. Mary's Church, Daughters of Isabella, and the local AARP chapter. She was the AARP Woman of the Year in 1998. Aggie enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and traveling. Her Army nurse uniform is on display in the Women in Military Service Museum in Texas, and she traveled to Washington DC in 1998 to attend the Women in Military Service Memorial dedication. Survivors include one daughter, Connie King and husband, Milton, of Ellis; son, David Niernberger and wife, Deb, of Denver, Colorado; son, John Niernberger and wife, Tamy, of Andover, Kansas; daughter-in-law Sandi Niernberger of Denver, Colorado; brother, Michael Langley and wife Maryl, of Leesburg, Florida; thirteen grandchildren: D'Anne (Niernberger) Cushing of Littleton Colorado, Alexa (Niernberger) Nichols of Denver Colorado, Joseph King of Ellis, Lorry (Howell) Suffretti of Buzzards Bay Massachusetts, Elliot Howell of Denver Colorado, Ashley (Niernberger) Swisher of Paola Kansas, Andrea Niernberger of Denver Colorado, William Niernberger of Denver Colorado, Rebecca (Niernberger) Atkins of Hill City, Tamera Niernberger of Ellis, Joshua Bantam of Derby Kansas; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ralph Niernberger, son Gary Niernberger, granddaughter Betsy Ann King, grandson Ernie Ray King; sister, Eileen Langley; and two brothers, Gilbert Langley and Thomas Langley.Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday at Keithley Funeral Chapel, on 400 E. 17th, Ellis Kansas 67637. On Sunday the Associates of thesisters of St. Agnes will have a prayer service at 5 PM, the Daughters of Isabella will have a rosary service at 5:30 followed by a parish vigil service at 6:30 all at the funeral home.Services will be on Monday February 14th, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis; burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ellis with military honors by the Ellis VFW.Memorials are suggested to Ellis Good Samaritan Center or St. Mary's Catholic Church, in care of the funeral chapel.
