Margien Colleen Hamzy

Margien Colleen Hamzy, 81, Victoria, formerly of Chandler, Ariz., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at St. John's Nursing Home, Victoria. She was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Bazine to Frank and Vida (Cox) Moore. She was a 1959 graduate of Fort Hays State University with a master's degree in reading and education. She married Bill Pivonka in 1949 in Larned. She later married Richard Hamzy in 1962. She was a teacher for 41 years in Kansas and Arizona. She taught English and reading in the junior high school in Chandler, Ariz., until retirement in 1985. She enjoyed traveling, watching baseball and NASCAR. Survivors include a daughter, Sherry Dibble and husband, Jim; a granddaughter, Kimberly Reel; a grandson, Andrew and wife, Kate; three great-grandchildren, Brittan, Emery and Caleb; three nieces; and many great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gerald and Dean; and a nephew, Gregory. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Messiah Lutheran Church, 20th and Main, Hays; graveside service will be at 4:30 p.m. in Ness City Cemetery. Friends can call from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Education Department of Fort Hays State University, St. John's of Victoria, Hays Humane Society or Hays Baseball Association in care of Brock's North Hill Chapel Funeral Home, 2509 Vine, Hays, KS 67601.
